Order picking systems have traditionally been designed to process a small volume of large orders. By now facing a large number of small orders, these systems see both their efficiency and effectiveness reduced, while distribution costs increase and consequently the loss of quality in customer service.

The system visually guides the operator to the exact locations in the warehouse to pick up the order items. Each location that contains a type of item or SKU (Stock Keeping Unit), has an associated DPD.
The most common DPD model incorporates a luminous push button that visually guides the operator to each location and allows him to confirm the operation, accompanied by a display that indicates the required quantity of picking for that item.

The functionalities required of the DPD are also adjusted to the needs of each company and type of solution: configurable models, sounds, flashes and colored lights, inventory control, notification of deviations in stock, replenishment requests, simultaneous picking of several operators, etc.

Although the process followed is very similar, picking can be structured in numerous ways depending on the number of references and the warehouse layout: order-to-order picking, batch picking (several orders simultaneously) or aisle picking or workstations, where picking is carried out sequentially.
